Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

Week 14 rank: 1 (0)

You almost never see this, but Josh Allen lost a game as a favorite against the Rams and still saw his MVP odds more than double, improving to -450 at many top-rated sportsbooks.

That’s in part because Saquon Barkley’s Eagles had a quiet game offensively and Lamar Jackson’s Ravens were on a bye week. But it’s mostly because Allen had one of the most unique six touchdown games in NFL history in the 44-42 loss, a wild game where the Rams were on point for a change this year and never allowed Buffalo to take a lead.

Allen joins Otto Graham (1954 NFL Championship Game) as the only quarterbacks to ever have 3 passing and 3 rushing touchdowns in a game. But Graham did it in a 56-10 win.

Allen became the sixth quarterback in NFL history to have three 1-yard rushing touchdowns in a game, scoring on the sneak.

Allen is also just the sixth player (any position) to have three 1-yard rushing touchdowns while trailing each time in a game as the Rams led wire-to-wire.

Two of Allen’s touchdown passes had at least 45 yards after the catch (YAC) on a screen pass to Ty Johnson and a short throw that was taken the distance with three broken tackles by Khalil Shakir.

Since Allen entered the league in 2018, he is the only quarterback to have two touchdown passes in a game that were throws with 5 air yards or fewer and at least 45 YAC. He has three such touchdowns this season, or as many as the rest of the NFL combined.

The Bills had nine possessions in the game, and they trailed by multiple scores on each of the final seven drives.

The only time Allen ever had the ball in the game with a deficit smaller than 7 points was on the second drive when Buffalo trailed 10-7. Allen threw three straight incompletions and the Bills’ punt was blocked for a huge touchdown by the Rams.

It was a very strange game, and it’s not like Allen didn’t play very well. It just never was in the cards for him to be in position to take the lead or even tie the game for that matter. And no matter how you slice it, “six touchdowns” is a bit misleading when you’re getting three 1-yard sneaks most quarterbacks don’t even get to attempt and two outlier YAC touchdowns that quarterbacks aren’t getting on throws that short either. It’s not nearly as impressive as it sounds.

Allen will have to step up again in Detroit too in what could easily be another shootout this week after the Bills were exposed on defense in this game. But the most troubling aspect was another late-game sequence that was botched by this Buffalo coaching staff. The Bills absolutely had to score as quickly as possible in a 9-point game and not use any of their timeouts so that they could get the ball back with some time.

But Allen again tried the sneak on 1st-and-goal and was stopped, leading to Buffalo using a timeout, killing the strategy and putting the game on an onside kick that they didn’t recover. They said that was their money play this year, but the fact is Allen has tried to run it in from the 1-yard line on four drives this year and he had to do it on multiple carries three times, including twice in this game. They should have thrown the ball even if that’s the lower-percentage play.

We’ll see what the Bills have for an encore in Detroit, because that was supposed to be the harder game to win than this one against the Rams.

2. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

Week 14 rank: 2 (0)

More than usual, every Kansas City game is starting to look the same. They just pulled off another 19-17 win at home in a divisional rematch that was low on possessions and turnovers. They blew a 13-point lead in the blink of an eye, they had protection problems that were exacerbated by Andy Reid forgetting they can run the football too, and they needed yet another game-winning drive at the end.

But when you have Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, you can still win games like this as he covers up a lot of warts. On the latest game-winning drive for the Chiefs, Mahomes had a couple of third-down conversions for the highlight reel, including this perfect escape to throw with both feet off the ground to Xavier Worthy to convert a 3rd-and-10:

Mahomes ability to keep track of where everyone is while navigating chaos is unmatched pic.twitter.com/h87soATwj3
— Ted Nguyen (@FB_FilmAnalysis) December 10, 2024

Then the play of the game was his scramble on 3rd-and-7 before finding Travis Kelce for another conversion that allowed the Chiefs to make their field goal the final snap. Another win, another AFC West title, and another step closer to the No. 1 seed after Buffalo lost Sunday. The Chiefs almost let this opportunity slip by, but their 2024 season has been filled of “almost losing” moments. It’s only led to a 12-1 record and one of the best shots yet of anyone pulling off a Super Bowl three-peat.

But Mahomes will have to be concerned with his offensive tackles going up against fronts like Cleveland and Houston these next two weeks. D.J. Humphries got his first action all season on Sunday night, and it went about as you’d expect for a player who just joined the team and hasn’t played football since 2023 ended. Then he was injured in the game, and the Chiefs still went empty set with the problematic Wanya Morris at left tackle. But Mahomes made it work out.

They’re just really stretching how much your quarterback can overcome to keep winning games this close every week.

3. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens

Week 14 rank: 3 (0)

The bye week probably came at the best time for the Ravens (8-5) to heal up and get Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry ready for this stretch run. Will we see more running from Jackson as he hinted at with a request from his mother after the Philadelphia loss. But he might not need to do it much against the lowly Giants this week.

Save your legs for the Steelers in Week 16, because they’ll be coming in with the division title in mind. Jackson still has a shot to overcome the MVP hype for Josh Allen and Saquon Barkley to win his third award if he can run the table with some huge games coming up, but he’s going to have to finish against the Steelers in Week 16 first. That defense has his number.

4. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions

Week 14 rank: 4 (0)

I don’t know how much we’ll really be entertaining the Jared Goff MVP campaign, but this is the month for him to make his case after a 34-31 win against the Packers, and now he gets the Bills in a major showdown this week. But against Green Bay, Goff had a strong night with 32-of-41 passing for 283 yards and 3 touchdowns. It wasn’t the most dominant ground performance from his running backs, Amon-Ra St. Brown only had 43 yards, and Goff had to get other people involved while also leading a game-winning drive and converting multiple fourth downs on the night.

But the most egregious play would have been if Goff tripped and didn’t get the handoff to his back on the crucial fourth down on the winning drive. Fortunately, Goff got the ball away as he wasn’t down after tripping, and the Lions converted and won on a field goal.

But Sunday will be a big test for Goff as he has to expect a shootout with Buffalo and a need to score at least 30 points to win that one. His defense is very injured right now, and it has fallen apart in the second half of the last two games, so it could be another chance for Goff to outduel another top quarterback this season in Josh Allen.

5. But even though this was supposed to be rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s team, it’s been the Sam Darnold Show in 2024, and Sunday was arguably his best game yet with 347 yards and 5 touchdown passes in a 42-21 win against Cousins’ Falcons.

Darnold continues to be outstanding at getting the ball down the field to his weapons as Jordan Addison (3) and Justin Jefferson (2) caught all of the touchdowns. But this play in particular to Jefferson for a touchdown was hands down the funniest play of Week 14. Just watch No. 20 Dee Alford, who allowed three touchdowns in the game:

the hand up for eternity. the fall. Let those ribs heal, let him crunch some tape on the season to see where he can get better, and hopefully, they can finish strong against a favorable schedule with some confidence going into the playoffs.

7. Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers

Week 14 rank: 6 (-1)

Justin Herbert is now 1-7 against the Chiefs when Patrick Mahomes starts. But Sunday night was already the fourth time he put the Chargers ahead in the fourth quarter only to go on to lose the game, something Mahomes is great at doing to teams.

It was going to be a tough night without J.K. Dobbins and Ladd McConkey, but the Chargers actually scored more points (17) without those players in this game than they did at home in Week 4 (10) with those players available. But Herbert did have his team ahead with a late field goal before the defense gave up a walk-off field goal to the Chiefs this time.

McConkey might have been able to make a difference in this game, but hopefully, he’ll be back soon as the Chargers (8-5) still need a win or two to lock down this playoff spot now that the Chiefs have won the AFC West again.

8. Russell Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers

Week 14 rank: 7 (-1)

Russell Wilson had a very slow start against the Browns and didn’t throw the ball nearly as well as he did in the snow in Cleveland two weeks earlier. But he was also making a very late adjustment to not having George Pickens, a surprise inactive with a hamstring injury. The Steelers didn’t seem to plan for that well, and it took a few quarters for them to finally start utilizing their other weapons like big Mike Williams and tight end Pat Freiermuth.

But Wilson avoided turnovers, only took one sack this time, and he threw two touchdowns to help the Steelers to a 10th win this season. However, his task in Philadelphia against a good secondary, and possibly without Pickens again, will be more daunting this week.

9. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals

Week 14 rank: 9 (0)

Joe Burrow finally led his first game-winning drive in two full years on Monday night in Dallas. Sure, it took the Cowboys touching a blocked punt in an absurd moment for the Bengals to get the ball back after some struggles for Burrow in the second half with a pick and multiple sacks taken.

But Ja’Marr Chase showed us why he deserves to be the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history when he took a short pass from Burrow the distance for the game-winning touchdown. Chase dominated on a night where Tee Higgins had just two catches.

That leaves the Bengals (5-8) with a sliver of playoff hope, but they still have no margin of error and do not control their own destiny.

10. Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers

Week 14 rank: 11 (+1)

It was a slow start for Jordan Love in Detroit, but you can’t blame him for Christian Watson fumbling a big completion. After that, the Packers scored on five of their last six drives. Love led a go-ahead touchdown drive and a game-tying field goal drive the last two times he touched the ball before the Lions ran out the clock to win on a field goal in a 34-31 final.

Love hasn’t thrown any interceptions in his last three games after throwing at least one in each of the first eight games this season. Brock Purdy shredded the Bears in a 38-13 rout, the fourth game in his career where he averaged at least 13 yards per pass attempt. Purdy spread the ball around to his receivers with big plays from multiple weapons on his way to 325 passing yards.

But we’ll see how Purdy does in this rematch Thursday night with the Rams. It was in the first matchup where he had one of the best games of his career, but the 49ers wasted it with dropped passes and a blown lead.

12. Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams

Week 14 rank: 15 (+3)

Stafford has been on a heater for the last month ever since that stinker against the Dolphins. But that’s a funny example of how the NFL works. The Rams couldn’t find the end zone once at home in a bad loss to the mediocre Dolphins, yet they lit up the Bills, the “best team in the AFC” according to some, for 44 points in a wire-to-wire win on Sunday to get to 7-6.

But Puka Nacua (162 yards) was absolutely incredible for Stafford in that game, and Cooper Kupp also made some vintage plays that looked like 2021 all over again. That duo is as good as it gets right now when they’re healthy and Stafford has enough time to throw to them.

But he’ll need another special performance to deal with the 49ers on Thursday night and keep this division title push going another week.

13. The only issue is he’s also thrown three more interceptions than he did last year on that many fewer attempts.

So, you’re getting a little Jameis Winston feast or famine with Baker this year, and that was on display in the 28-13 win over the Raiders on Sunday. Mayfield went from a 14-0 lead with a couple of touchdowns to three turnovers in the second quarter, leading to a team sweating out a small lead in the fourth quarter before Mayfield put it away with a couple of quick touchdown drives.

But the good news is the Buccaneers are 7-6 and back in first place in the NFC South with some more very winnable games ahead on the schedule. They could lose to the Chargers on the road this week and still finish 10-7 if they win out against the Cowboys (no Dak Prescott), Panthers, and Saints (no Derek Carr).

14. But it’s going to take some big efforts in the next two weeks against the Texans and 49ers as well as some help from teams like the Broncos and Chargers losing games.

But Miami (6-7) is still alive after coming back in the fourth quarter to beat the Jets in overtime. Tua was 33-of-47 for 331 yards and threw a game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Jonnu Smith, who didn’t even have a catch in regulation before coming through big on the game-winning drive with three big grabs.

In the seven games since his return, Tagovailoa has thrown 15 touchdowns to 1 interception, he’s completing 76.1% of his passes, 7.5 yards per attempt, and he has a 114.1 passer rating. Miami has also scored at least 27 points in 5-of-7 games, so that’s usually going to be enough to win most games.

But we know road games against good teams is the bugaboo for this Miami team and Tua. Their only such game left this season is this week in Houston, so let’s see how that goes before we start seriously entertaining this playoff talk.

But Tua’s play since returning is very encouraging after a terrible start to the season in Miami.

15. That’s not good enough.

Hurts was able to run for 59 yards and a touchdown to make his overall numbers look better, but you don’t want to be having to come from behind at home against a team like the Panthers when you’re favored by two touchdowns. That really turned the tide of the game after Winston struck first with a 35-yard touchdown to Jerry Jeudy. But he wouldn’t find the end zone again until it was too little too late.

Winston gets the Chiefs at home next, a defense that is really struggling right now to get any takeaways and stop big throws down the field. This is in 13 starts this season for the Jets for Rodgers, and now the team has been eliminated from the playoffs, extending the longest playoff drought in North American sports to 14 seasons.

It was the drought that Rodgers was supposed to end, but so many things have gone wrong for the Jets this year. In fact, Cousins is the first quarterback since Brett Favre on the 2005 Packers to go four straight games with no touchdown passes, at least one interception, and at least 25 pass attempts. The NFL record streak is five games by Jim Plunkett for the 1972 Patriots.

To make matters worse for Cousins, this latest loss saw him completely outshined by his Minnesota replacement, Sam Darnold, who threw five touchdown passes. But the kick was expertly blocked, and the game ended before it should have, which sounds like sweet mercy for a game involving the Giants.

Related Articles:

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 14: The Amusing Role Reversal for Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson in MVP Race

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 13: Enough Near Comebacks to Make Joe Burrow Blush on His Bye

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 12: Josh Allen Regains Top Spot After Epic Run to Beat the Chiefs

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 11: It’s a Game of Inches in the Tough AFC North

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 10: Patrick Mahomes Is Still No. 1 in the Clutch

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 9: Colts Right to Bench Anthony Richardson and Jayden Daniels for MVP

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 8: The Return of Russell Wilson and the Curious Case of Patrick Mahomes

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 7: Big Receiver Help Coming for Aaron Rodgers and Josh Allen

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 6: Rookies Heating Up as Josh Allen Struggled in Houston

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 5: Are Jayden Daniels and Sam Darnold Really This Great?

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 4: Josh Allen’s MVP Push, the Grand Return of Andy Dalton, and Jayden Daniels’ Amazing Start

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 3: NFC Is Crushing the AFC So Far

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings Week 2: Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen Still on Top

2024 NFL Quarterback Rankings: How Patrick Mahomes Became His Own Tier

The NFL had a very eventful Week 14 in the quarterback field as Josh Allen managed to strengthen his MVP case despite an upset loss against the Rams that we’ll get right into.
