Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

Week 15 rank: 1 (0)

It would be considered sacrilegious in Buffalo, but the Bills should really consider adding a roof to that new stadium. Josh Allen’s had some ridiculous numbers in back-to-back indoor games against NFC teams that apparently aren’t used to seeing what he can do.

The Bills are also the first team in NFL history to play consecutive games where they scored and allowed at least 42 points. They’re 1-1 in those games too, so it’s not like this is a championship formula going forward. But they got the big win in Detroit, which was really a reversal of the same game they lost to the Rams with Buffalo in the role of the wire-to-wire winning team as they took control from the first drive.

People are saying the MVP race is over as Allen has moved to -900 odds, but that’s an absurd position to take when there are three games left and someone has the stats that Lamar Jackson has in Baltimore. While Allen should be able to finish 14-3, one upset loss at the hands of the Patriots or Jets combined with a hot finish by Jackson should be enough to sway things at the end. Remember, Tom Brady blew his 2021 MVP campaign when he lost 9-0 to the Saints at home in a prime-time game. You just never know.

But the Bills are rolling, and I think the reason the offense is having so much success right now is that they are making it hard to identify on who to double and worry about in this offense. Coordinator Joe Brady is cooking, and you don’t know if the backs are going to make huge plays in the receiving game down the field as they did in Detroit, or if it’s the tight ends’ day to shine, or if Allen picks you apart with Khalil Shakir over the middle. Someone like Amari Cooper didn’t even have a target in Detroit, let alone a catch.

Meanwhile, in past years it was pretty designated that Stefon Diggs was the No. 1 target and you needed to shift your double teams and best cover players towards him. Gabe Davis was the low-percentage deep threat for big plays. They’re much more varied than that now, Allen is playing some of his best ball, and a defense that’s so crushed by injuries like the Lions had little hope of slowing them down.

But this season is far from decided as playing in 44-42 and 48-42 games every week is simply not what championship-winning teams do.

2. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens

Week 15 rank: 3 (+1)

If Lamar Jackson is going to start running more the rest of the season, we may have got a glimpse of it Sunday when he had 30 yards in the first quarter. However, he did lose a fumble on the second snap from scrimmage to sour a scoring drive. But he more than made up for it by throwing for 5 touchdowns on 21-of-25 passing for 290 yards. He also finished with 65 rushing yards as the Ravens secured the largest spread win (-16.5) this season in a 35-14 win in New York.

But let’s be real. The Ravens were expected to crush the Giants. People want to see Lamar finally break through and impressively defeat the Steelers, something he’s never done in his career and we’re in Year 7. He threw three picks in 2019 in Pittsburgh, his only win against the Steelers as a starter. While he’s been injured for a lot of Ravens-Steelers games, he’s healthy this week, and the Steelers aren’t with T.J. Watt and George Pickens both questionable to play.

Let’s see what Jackson can do against that defense this time around as the division title is on the line with Pittsburgh able to win it if they can get the upset again. If we’re going to take Jackson seriously for the Super Bowl, we need to see him win a game like this and start rewriting his bad history against the few teams he can’t seem to beat.

3. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

Week 15 rank: 2 (-1)

We’re going to talk about the ankle injury later this week in Part 4 of the LOAT series in comparing Patrick Mahomes to Tom Brady. Health will be the subject, naturally, and it’s hard to say Mahomes is the luckiest there as he’s dealing with yet another high-ankle sprain while the Chiefs have a tough schedule in must-win games to claim the No. 1 seed.

But Sunday in Cleveland was a very strange Mahomes game. The Chiefs finally were getting takeaways in bunches, something they hadn’t done all season outside of the San Francisco game, and sure enough that helped build a 21-0 lead. But Mahomes missed out on a third touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy by a matter of inches as they called it a lateral and scored it as a run instead of a pass.

But after DeAndre Hopkins dropped a deep ball on third-and-long for the third game in a row, the Chiefs really fell into an offensive funk with Mahomes trying to make a lot of deep throws and misfiring every time while taking a lot of hits. The Browns didn’t sack him, but they hit him 11 times, and obviously the last one was a bad one as it got him high and low and knocked him out of the game.

Mahomes finished 19-of-38 for 159 yards as the Chiefs were marked with a season-high 6 drops. But the better question is why were they trying to throw so deep and so often with a rare multi-touchdown lead? Especially in a game in Cleveland where left guard Joe Thuney is playing tackle against Myles Garrett. Why wouldn’t you run Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco more?

Mahomes also attempted an aggressive throw into coverage on 31.6% of his attempts, the highest by any Week 15 quarterback according to NGS. That’s very unlike him as he’s usually among the least aggressive quarterbacks every week.

The Chiefs are lucky it doesn’t appear to be a severe high-ankle sprain. But it’s a tough situation with pass rushes like Houston and Pittsburgh coming up on short weeks with the Chiefs needing to win to get that top seed. We’ll just have to see if Mahomes plays or if there’s a Carson Wentz write-up coming soon here.

4. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions

Week 15 rank: 4 (0)

Jared Goff is just the second quarterback in the Super Bowl era to lead his offense to 42 points, throw zero interceptions, and get less than 50 rushing yards from his ground game. The problem is he still lost since he was facing the only other quarterback to have a game like that in Josh Allen, who did it against the 2020 Seahawks.

Detroit’s losing streak is over, but its not for the reasons you probably expected. Goff didn’t have a single turnover against Buffalo, and the Lions were 3-for-3 on fourth downs. They just couldn’t get stops on defense as they battle injuries on that side of the ball, and the running game was shut down after rushing for over 100 yards in every other game this season. They lost David Montgomery (MCL) for the season, so the pressure will be on Goff even more going forward.

I think he played a fantastic game, throwing for just shy of 500 yards. It’s not going to be a long postseason if the defense doesn’t get better than this, but at least we know the Lions can still score a ton.

5. Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders

Week 15 rank: 6 (+1)

I had high expectations for Jayden Daniels after getting a bye week to rest those ribs and he did not disappoint in New Orleans. Look at him hold the ball for over 8 seconds here according to NGS and create a touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin:

Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin are just so damn good. can’t believe this is my life. pic.twitter.com/04XSytpe8h
— Jackson Didlake (@diidlake) December 15, 2024

There was also a play where Daniels scrambled for 24 yards on a 3rd-and-14. He’s the real deal, but it would have been nice if the Commanders scored more than 20 points here. A late missed field goal opened the door for the Saints, and they almost came away with an upset.

But Daniels has probably locked up Offensive Rookie of the Year after Bo Nix and Brock Bowers did poorly in Week 15. Daniels was 25-of-31 for 226 yards and 2 touchdown passes with 66 rushing yards. He continues to be a historically accurate dual threat.

Most games in a season with 80% completions, 200+ passing yards,30+ rushing yards

1. 2024 Jayden Daniels – 4
2. 2000 @RichGannon12 – 2
3. 53 other seasons – 1
— Scott Kacsmar (@ScottKacsmar) December 18, 2024

6. But he still threw for 271 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Bengals won 37-27 in a game that didn’t need to be nearly that sloppy.

But we’ll see if they can keep it going against a Cleveland team that’s had some success against them over the years.

9. Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Week 15 rank: 13 (+4)

It was a very impressive showing for Baker Mayfield as he completed 22-of-27 passes for 288 yards and 4 touchdowns against a Los Angeles defense that was No. 1 in points allowed this year. He shredded them with Mike Evans, who is on the hunt for another 1,000-yard season and he did his part with two touchdowns in this one.

If Baker can just cut down the turnovers, this offense is elite and can score with anybody in the league. This was also the second time this year they topped 500 yards of offense as the running game with Bucky Irving and Rachaad White is also thriving.

10. Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles

Week 15 rank: 15 (+5)

Finally, the Eagles put the Saquon Barkley MVP campaign on hold (permanently?) and let the passing game shine again. Jalen Hurts was excellent to start the game with A.J. Brown feasting on a vulnerable Pittsburgh secondary as long as you keep T.J. Watt blocked.

But with the Tush Push aiding some drives, the Eagles dominated the clock in the second half and even ran out the final 10 minutes to deny the Steelers ever got the ball back. The Eagles can absolutely go all the way and win out through the Super Bowl with this type of passing game to go along with the defense.

Challenging game up next in Washington, but you can’t discount the Eagles going 15-2 and possibly even having the No. 1 seed throughout the playoffs. With Detroit’s injuries, you have to think Hurts and the Eagles might be the new favorite to come out of the NFC.

11. Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers

Week 15 rank: 7 (-4)

Justin Herbert threw an interception for the first time since September in this game, a 17-10 lead that quickly turned into a 40-17 rout by Tampa Bay. The Chargers have scored exactly 17 points in three consecutive games as Herbert is struggling to get things going with anyone not named Ladd McConkey. It’s not great news with a tough Denver defense coming in next in what could be a very important game for playoff seeding.

The Chargers (8-6) are probably not in trouble yet for the playoffs as they still have the Patriots and Raiders to close the season, but they need to start scoring more points or we’re going to see a very quick playoff exit.

12. Russell Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers

Week 15 rank: 8 (-4)

It was always going to be a tough day for Russell Wilson in Philadelphia without George Pickens (hamstring) available. But after a completely ineffective start, Wilson got some things going and the Steelers were down just 17-13 at the half. Unfortunately, they touched the ball just twice and ran 11 plays in the second half because of how the Eagles dominated the ball. It also didn’t help that Najee Harris fumbled a perfect pitch from Wilson.

I don’t want to crucify Wilson for a performance like this when the Eagles are playing so well and hogged the ball like they did. But the Steelers better hope Pickens can return for Saturday in Baltimore, because this offense doesn’t look like it has much of a plan without him. Wilson tried to get rid of the ball the fastest he did all season, but the plays just weren’t producing much.

13. The Rams are now favored to win the NFC West, and they have a capable quarterback with a great receiving duo. It didn’t help that the team blew a fourth-quarter lead against a division foe for the fourth time this year, but you don’t deserve to win a game where you only score 6 points.

Then in a 9-6 game with the 49ers arguably in field-goal range, Purdy threw a deep ball that was intercepted. The Rams ran out most of the clock before sacking Purdy to end the game in a 12-6 final.

The injuries will always be brought up for why the 49ers collapsed this season, but the fact is you can’t blow that many leads to all of your division rivals in games where you played well enough despite the injuries for over 45 minutes.
